well I’m sorry if you don’t get it, but its pretty simple.

See a stingray death is a rare thing, and since Irwin’s deaths is the most widely known death from one right now in pop culture, seeing a killer stingray in game would make a connection is very easy, that is if you have common sense. (that and its an underwater creature, something you wouldn’t fight in the game anyways) Since it stands out, it gives reason to believe its there because of the late Steve Irwin.

Even then though I do agree, saying its connected to Irwin would be a mere guess, but it makes more sense then just looking seeing a crocodile

Now you take a crocodile, an animal that actually lives in the regions that Elona is modeled after. its a natural fit for it to be there. You wouldn’t think much of it, and wouldn’t go "oh gosh, crocs are what Steve Irwin hunted, and since he died a month ago, I’m going to make the whacky assumption that they are in the game simply because of him"

And hey, you are the guy that jumps in the thread from nowhere tries to flame me, and fails under his own ignorence. so dont go pointing fingers sparky.

The whole damn point is, just cause its a crocodile, doesnt make it connected to anything. Thats the same thing as looking at a painting i did and you saying it has to do with divinci, just cause he was a painter.

That's right, and the tigers in Cantha are obviously a reference to Siegfried and Roy, while the wolves in Tyria symbolize the game developers' deep connection with Jack London. Godzilla is represented as well, because I'm sure I saw a lizard in there somewhere. Oh, snap, and Flamingos are in Nightfall...a direct reference to Robert DeNiro! Flamingo's, casinos, "Casino" - Mr. Deniro!

Exoudeus, now really; CyberNigma just asked a question based on his/her feelings, if you had of wanted to respond to that post a simple no would have been appropriate. As for you lot who flamed Exoudeus, shame on you, sad you would rise to such ignorance.
So finally CyperNigma i will make an attempt to properly comment on your thought. No, I do not think the crocks have anything to do with Mr Irwin, but i think only Anet could answer this question for sure.

Please, after the amount of flamebait Exoudeus had to deal with he was perfectly justified. I would have probablly hosted a similar rant about the idiocy of this "steve irwin connection idea" if he hadn't beat me to it.

I made my secondary profession for my Dervish into ranger, just so I can go track down that crocodile and name it 'Steve'.

The amount of energy that Exoudeous has put into denying the possibility of a connection is just stunning, given that it goes across at least two separate threads I am aware of - when all it deserved was a simply 'personally don't think it is likely'.

Whether or not it was connected to begin with, in some future update it should become connected. I'd say they could either give that croc a bit of oddball dialogue, or put a 'croc hunter' hat on its head, or something.

I wanna see a croc with big boofy hair and named sweetheart

Oh, and how many animals have you seen in the game with the same name as in the real world? A lot of them, black bear, wolf, etc...if there was an intentional connection or a connection intended for us, it would be more obvious.

meh.. I don't see any harm in seeing a connection between them.. could be.. who knows but ANet right?
As far as the whole connection thing, Steve would be more likely to be associated with crocodiles rather than stingrays... just ask someone what animal they think of when they hear the name Steve Irwin

Yes, you can find many things using The Da Colbert Code.

Of all the things out there, noone would have thought that there might be Drakes on the Plain.

Exoudeous... troll much?

Considering all the other references in Nightfall; I don't see why the replacement crocs can't be a tribute to Steve Irwin. If so, good on ANet for taking the time and effort to do this.

Btw, I want them to randomly say "Crikey" as well

You know, I notice alot of people are pointing out that there are other animals in the game and their not references to anything else, but if you'll notice the OP did say that they were hippos before his death and after their now crocs... So what's the problem with having a little fun and a little remembrance to a man who gave a lot to furthering the study of animals especially the croc?

As a side note I'd be a little creeped out of my pet croc started saying crickey all the time.

On a seperate sidenote most people are known for the things they do in life not for what they were killed by. Wrestling with Crocs and moving them 10 feet from where he woke them up is what Steve was known for, not wrestling with stingrays and moving them 10 feet from where he found them. (That 10 feet thing is a joke, I know he did alot more for the critters then that.)

bah, it's my tribute if I want it to be I suppose. there's no telling what the reason is. only beta testers and developers would know if there were originally crocs in the higher level areas and hippos in just the lower level areas. I doubt it's something they'll advertise. I've done that before in software development with various tools, used names for soething that doesn't seem obvious just because I recognize it. they may have done it with that intention and never plan on telling anyone. or maybe they figured the hippos were crappy (I thought they were neat) and changed it to crocs for no other reason.. something prompted them to actively change it from the preview though.

regardless, it was just a pondering. to me it's a tribute and that's all that matters I suppose.

btw, thanks to exo for blowing this thread away. I think maybe it should be closed before it turns into an even worse flamefest between the people that wanted a tribute and the people that were against it (and may now feel like they were wrong if it was indeed a tribute).. it really doesn't matter.. enjoy the game..

Oh, I thought he was known for dangling his newborn baby above the jaws of an adult crocodile. At least, that's how I found out about him.

And just yesterday i was at a cave that partly resembled a cave that was destroyed during the stone age. People must like tributing a lot. In fact, GW all-in-all is a tribute to EVERYTHING cool there is in the world. I mean, dragons existed, there's a few here. Some trolls probably existed, there's many here, and Kiririn's are probably a reference to unicorns, but due to copyright issues they had to nerf the horn.
So umm...have a nice day!

Maybe crocodiles are becoming endangered too >.<

Or maybe they're revered some place where ANet is or is planning to do business.
